Hulk Hogan owns Gawker now? I was pulling a 24 hour shift at the ER when this stuff went down, but I’ve done some catching up, and I think I got the story so far...
But how bad is it, really?

I honestly dont know anything except Gawker is out 115 million.

Yup, that seems to be the actual sum, and it's raised questions regarding liquidity from people more in the know.

Hulk won a big judgement against Gawker. Everybody is freaking out because they seem to think Gawker has to cut him a check by Monday. That’s not how it works, so calm down folks!

Well that’s just compensatory damages, he also sought punitives which tend to be more than compensatory damages; so it could be a lot more. But yeah, this stuff takes time and it depends on hogan’s goal.

I’m of the opinion that Gawker, political opinions be damned, will be able to get some appeal going and it’ll be many years until any money changes hands.

They’ll appeal for years, hopefully losing and racking up interest. Hopefully everything will be sold off piecemeal and Jalopnik will be free of the Gawkerbel borg.

That would actuallt be cool. Imagine Car and Driver/Road and Track taking up Oppo and Jalopnik

So, I’m not seeing things. (Logo)

Have you ever read the comments sections on those sites? No thanks.

I’m mostly just shitstirring.

Well, that much is true, and some might come over to Oppo...

To be fair, in Florida, to appeal you must put forward a non refundable 10%(?) beforehand. So they are out a ton of money they apparently don’t really have.

I wasn't directing that at anybody. There have been so many posts about it, and some seem legit worried. Carry on your shitstirting sir!

Without getting into detail of things I don’t fully understand, there are steps in between this judgement and an actual appeal that can change everything. Even if they do have to pay the judgement, they don’t have to pay in a lump sum. They’ll be making payments to the Hulk for many many years. This is really bad for Gawker, but it’s not going out of business this week bad.
I’ve learned tons about the civil suit process by listening to the Readonable Doubt podcast with Adam Carola and Mark Geragos. It’s really interesting stuff.

After seeing clips of the trial, I don’t see why they would appeal, as it might make things worse. Who cracks a child porn joke during a trial? Gawker does.

There’s a 115 million reasons to appeal. They’ll at least get the judgement reduced.
I’m not sticking up for Gawker btw, just pointing out some reasons why we don’t need to freak out about Oppo disappearing all of the sudden. Not gonna happen.
